So, today has been the worst day, definitely in the past five years, maybe in my life. I’ve been pretty lucky when it comes to file loss, computer crashes, etc. and while I’m knocking on wood right now, I have never lost more than a small handful of files… Well today, while I was working on a new website for Ludwig Clothing, I need to get a blog set up. I was having some troubles getting a mysql database going on their server and I needed to get a way from all the tech stuff for a bit, so I decided I could just quickly install a blog on the back end of my site, mess with the layout/template stuff, then get their backend stuff going later. So I use Mediatemple for hosting and they have this “one click” install thing that installs some web apps for you including WordPress… I’ve used this a bunch before and it works really good… I don’t know if it was because I was just over messing with small technical crap or what, but when I went to install the new “temp” blog, I did not create a new database and overwrote the entire Defgrip blog…. That’s like three years of blogging… I won’t go into much detail about that, but I fucked up big time and I had no database back up. For anyone using WordPress for their blogs… BACK UP YOUR DATABASE!!! There is a simple plugin that will do this for you (check it out here) and I am seriously freaking out that I did not have this set up.
After going through a bunch of stuff I found out that my host has a back up of my database and for only $125 I can get it going again. The only thing is the last time they backed up was in February of 08, so we are going to loose 6 months of blog posts. Considering a few hours ago, I thought I lost everything, I’m pretty psyched. I have to wait a few hours, but hopefully everything will be back up soon.
So, this all went down at like 4pm and I had been on my computer since the morning, so by 7pm I needed to get out… I called up Travis Collier and we went for a ride on the sea wall… After a good 20+ minutes of me venting to Travis about the whole blog thing, I got a text from Darcy about bike graphics… I have had some problems with my phone, not getting calls and texts, so this text was from a few days ago, saying something about how we need the new MacNeil bike graphics ASAP and to call him… The weird thing was I had already sent in the bike graphics, so while I was trying to figure out this text, I started to ride again, with my phone in my hand… After a sec I realized it was an old text that just came though and went to put my phone back in my pocket… when FUCK! I dropped it right on the glass… What a day. Deleted my whole blog, then shattered my iPhone…
I’m going to hit the Apple store in the morning to see if I can get my glass replaced, becaues the phone still works fine… even with it shattered… but who knows how much it will cost… It will probably be like $400 for new glass or $500 for a new phone…
So to top it all off… I came to this blog to do a new post and all my photos in the blog were gone…WTF??? I had no idea how this could of happened, since this blog is on an entirely different database… But I think I figured it out…. While I was fucking with all the Defgrip blog stuff, I went to re-upload all the blog photos, but I was logged into this blog to check out some of my config stuff in a different tab in Transmit… and with everything going on in my head I didn’t realize, but instead of uploading all the photos to the Defgrip blog, I uploaded them to this blog, overriding all my photos. DOPE!!!!
So, I don’t even really know what to say other than I fucked up BIG TIME today… More than I ever have in my entire life… I guess all I can say is BACK YOUR SHIT UP! I just typed a lot, so that’s it… I just hope tomorrow is better than today.

[...] time. I just vented a bit on my blog, so if you want to read about what the day’s been like, check it here. Sorry for [...]
Bad news, but if losing some files and breaking a phone amount to the worst day of your life count yourself very lucky. Be glad you don’t have anything to truly be sad about. Remember this is september the 11th, think about how the relatives of those victims, and the countless lives lost in the resulting conflicts, must feel.
Dont worry dude i totally understand, Just last week I had a hard disk failure on my mac book and everything was wiped out. Only managed to salvage some stuff that i backed up a while ago. Well just take it easy, stay positive and remember that things could have been a lot worse.
sorry to hear, man. ouch.
Man, tough day! Sorry to hear. You should be shinin’ today though!
[...] HARRISON BOYCE today was my day: Harrison (featured in the Gnarwhale video above) just hit a spot circular field of bad luck and has explained it all on his blog. It’s also a pretty good reminder of how awesome Defgrip is, only a few hours down and I already miss the daily updates. Don’t worry Harrison, it’ll be all good soon. Send good vibes his way! [...]
This really hit home for me. I feel for you.
Currently backing up all my shit. I have like four years on our database as well.
Good luck getting it all sorted.
Couldn’t even imagine dropping my iPhone. Fuck.
I just checked with our service guys, but we don’t fix iphone here
sorry bout all the bad luck homie!
Yeah, that stuff always seems a lot worse when you’re the one who did it yourself! Keep your head up! I agree with Matt, keep your head up! Files are just that. You’ll get back on track in no time! Good luck!
Thanks guys! and yeah, Mat, I’m definitely a very lucky person because I really haven’t experienced a big loss in my family or anything on that level…. My phone is just a material object and i’m not really worried about that, but if I do loose all the posts on defgrip from the past three years, that’s a lot of hard work not only on my part, but all the guys that help with Defgrip… Still waiting to hear from my web host and I’ve been to the Apple store and a Mac reseller ad I’ve had no luck… I have a few more places to check out, so we’ll see… All I really care about it Defgrip. it’s just funny that all that shit happened on the same day… When it rains it pours!!! Thanks again for the comments though!!!!
Maaaan, sorry Harrson. Two weeks ago I accidentally deleted 20 gigs of word files, photos, and random things of what I’m sure will be important when I realize that I don’t have them anymore. Film is a logistical nightmare, but I at least know that the photo still EXISTS somewhere in the mess of my photo drawer.
Wow that’s a bummer.
Technology makes it so easy for us to produce and document data, but on the flip side is also very easy to lose that same data – even if you’re diligent about it. I once accidentally erased 200GB of backed up files with the click of a button. After I realized what I did, I just stared at my screen in total shock of my error. I can imagine that’s how you felt.
But hell, you’re doing an amazing job on defgrip, Macneil, and everything. Keep up the good work.
shit man that sucks big time! sounds like you’re too busy dood, need to stop and have a rev once in a while… haha….
i’d shit my pants if i lost all my pictures like what fudger was talking about, now that i got a digi cam….
Damn… Ryan and Steve!!! That’s a lot of stuff! I know what you mean about film Ryan. I hate burning DVD’s but that’s almost the best way to really back your stuff up good. I back everything up to a few drives every day, but the drives could crash at any time… or like Steve, accidentally delete your stuff… Maybe I’ll buy a stack of DVD’s and have burning session very soon…
Brutal.
sympathies.
