I was in Seattle last week with Michaela and we stayed at my mom’s place. She had just picked up a record player a few days before we got there and when we my brother was over for dinner, we hooked it up and dug out some old records. My mom was a radio DJ for like 20 years and has always had a huge collection of records. My dad’s a musician as well, so I grew up with a lot of music. I remember listening to a lot of actual records when I was real young at the house I grew up in in Kirkland, but we switched to CD’s pretty early on cus my mom would get boxes and boxes of them from labels, so our record playing days faded out at a young age. I think it also had to do with the fact that the table we had broke and when you have everything on CD, why get a new record player. Throughout the years my mom’s record collection has grown smaller and smaller. We’ve moved houses, my brothers taken a lot, she’s donated a lot of the crap ones she got for free, but there’s still a nice stack of classic in a storage room downstairs (my old bedroom… haha). She’s been talking about getting a new table for a long time, but it wasn’t until her old tenants moved out of the downstairs apartment and gave her their old one last week, that we’ve actually had a table in our house. When Michaela, my brother Hamilton and I showed up, it wasn’t plugged in yet, but we got that thing going real quick. We didn’t have much time to dig through the records, but Hamilton grabbed a few and I snapped some pics of the albums he dug up. As soon as we have more space, I’m getting a table for our house, but for now, I’ll have to wait till my next Seattle trip… Here’s what we were jamming to.

It was my birthday when I was down there and we met up with my dad, step-mom, and sisters at the beach. They were all hanging out at this beach called Denny Park that was right down the street from the house I grew up in. I hadn’t been to that park in years, but it definitely brought back crazy memories. I spent so many days hanging out there in the summer and we’d always go watch the boats with the Christmas lights and stuff in the winter. It really got me thinking how much fun it was to be a kid.

So, like I said before, I was my b-day and Michaela hooked up some amazing gifts!! New clear(ish) Nom De Guerre X Oliver Peoples glasses. I have the black ones, but the clear are so hot! (Andrew McMullen shot that photo on the Burrard bridge the other day)

And then she followed those up with a Tolomeo desk lamp! Now my desk is super official!

So, since I’ve been twittering a bunch, I’ve been slacking on my blog. I’ve really been thinking about twitter vs my blog and I think I’ve got it figured out. Twitter is for random crap that happens throughout the day that doesn’t really matter… and sharing links and stuff that I might not post on Defgrip. But my blog should be where I document the important stuff… or more like a summary of what I’ve been up to… like my journal. It’s so rad to go back through old blog posts and look at old photos, but I’ve had twitter for over a year and not once, have I gone though my old posts and looked back on life. We’ll see if i follow through with it, but I’m going to try to step up my blog posts on here a bit.

So remember that scene in Risky Business when Tom Cruise and his girl are on the train towards the end… They are trying to get down and as the ride goes on, everyone starts to get off the train (except for that bum that they have to pull off). Well, that is me right now, minus trying to get down with my girl. The train is usually packed, but as my ride went on this morning, everyone slowly got off. I thought it was pretty weird, so I snapped a pic, then right as I was putting my phone back in my pocket that same Phil Collins song (i think it’s In The Air Tonight) came on in this DJ AM mix I’m listing to. How weird??? Haha. While I’ve been typing, this a few people have got back on my car, but when it’s usually packed with no room to sit, an empty car is real weird, then for the Phil Collins song to come on… That’s to random. I guess I’m just living in a movie. Haha

So, today has been the worst day, definitely in the past five years, maybe in my life. I’ve been pretty lucky when it comes to file loss, computer crashes, etc. and while I’m knocking on wood right now, I have never lost more than a small handful of files… Well today, while I was working on a new website for Ludwig Clothing, I need to get a blog set up. I was having some troubles getting a mysql database going on their server and I needed to get a way from all the tech stuff for a bit, so I decided I could just quickly install a blog on the back end of my site, mess with the layout/template stuff, then get their backend stuff going later. So I use Mediatemple for hosting and they have this “one click” install thing that installs some web apps for you including Wordpress… I’ve used this a bunch before and it works really good… I don’t know if it was because I was just over messing with small technical crap or what, but when I went to install the new “temp” blog, I did not create a new database and overwrote the entire Defgrip blog…. That’s like three years of blogging… I won’t go into much detail about that, but I fucked up big time and I had no database back up. For anyone using Wordpress for their blogs… BACK UP YOUR DATABASE!!! There is a simple plugin that will do this for you (check it out here) and I am seriously freaking out that I did not have this set up.
After going through a bunch of stuff I found out that my host has a back up of my database and for only $125 I can get it going again. The only thing is the last time they backed up was in February of 08, so we are going to loose 6 months of blog posts. Considering a few hours ago, I thought I lost everything, I’m pretty psyched. I have to wait a few hours, but hopefully everything will be back up soon.
So, this all went down at like 4pm and I had been on my computer since the morning, so by 7pm I needed to get out… I called up Travis Collier and we went for a ride on the sea wall… After a good 20+ minutes of me venting to Travis about the whole blog thing, I got a text from Darcy about bike graphics… I have had some problems with my phone, not getting calls and texts, so this text was from a few days ago, saying something about how we need the new MacNeil bike graphics ASAP and to call him… The weird thing was I had already sent in the bike graphics, so while I was trying to figure out this text, I started to ride again, with my phone in my hand… After a sec I realized it was an old text that just came though and went to put my phone back in my pocket… when FUCK! I dropped it right on the glass… What a day. Deleted my whole blog, then shattered my iPhone…
I’m going to hit the Apple store in the morning to see if I can get my glass replaced, becaues the phone still works fine… even with it shattered… but who knows how much it will cost… It will probably be like $400 for new glass or $500 for a new phone…
So to top it all off… I came to this blog to do a new post and all my photos in the blog were gone…WTF??? I had no idea how this could of happened, since this blog is on an entirely different database… But I think I figured it out…. While I was fucking with all the Defgrip blog stuff, I went to re-upload all the blog photos, but I was logged into this blog to check out some of my config stuff in a different tab in Transmit… and with everything going on in my head I didn’t realize, but instead of uploading all the photos to the Defgrip blog, I uploaded them to this blog, overriding all my photos. DOPE!!!!
So, I don’t even really know what to say other than I fucked up BIG TIME today… More than I ever have in my entire life… I guess all I can say is BACK YOUR SHIT UP! I just typed a lot, so that’s it… I just hope tomorrow is better than today.
