Slovika in Film

Visiting Michaela’s family in Slovika was interesting. They couldn’t speak English and I can’t speak a word of Slovakian, so with out Michaela or her mom around, not much conversing went on. One thing her family could clearly see with out speaking to me is that I’m very much into photography and cameras. While I was there Michaela’s aunt and uncle each gave me one camera, both old film camera. I was extremely excited and very thankful and for anyone who’s been to my house, they know I like old cameras! The photos below were shot one of the two cameras, a Praktica Super TL 35mm.

LA in Photos

Andrew and I headed down to LA before Interbike in Vegas last month. We only had three days, but we made them count. We hit the beach, rode bikes, did some shopping and hung out with friends. LA is always a blast and I really need to go there more! I was on a “once a month” schedule last year and I loved it! Hopefully I’ll be back soon. Andrew Nuno, and I compiled our favorite photos from the weekend and put together a Photogallery on Defgrip. You can check that right here.

Summer Photos

I keep all my photos on my G5 at home, but some times, I forget to transfer folders over from my laptop… Today I was looking for some photos and came across a few different batches of pictures that I’ve never posted. These photos where taken over the summer in Seattle at Gasworks park with Chris Martindale, Josh Kechloian, Mike Leask and Steve Machuga. These guys are by far the best friends I’ve had and It’s always rad to get to hang out with all of them at once… I think Josh shot a bunch of these photos because I was filming Chris for a web video on MacNeil that I still haven’t edited… I need to get on it!! Oh… I didn’t color correct these photos… I get way to crazy and will spend hours messing with random photos like these, when I should be doing something better like working or sleeping…

I just downloaded this little app to edit photos called Photogene. It’s pretty dope, but I’m surprised there is no black and white option. It’s the first app I paid for. The photo with the “cool” border is from the app and the other is just straight from my phone. Isn’t it rad how discolored my monitor is. Haha

Soap Box

Today was a bit better than yesterday. After running around to the Apple store, an Apple reseller, the Rogers Wireless store, I ended up back at the Apple and was able to get a new replacement phone for $250. Thanks to Chris Young for that tip! The sales guy that was helping me had no idea about the replacement thing and if it wasn’t for Chris, I’d probably still have a smashed phone. I did break down and get a case for my phone though. I’ve never been into cases, but I’m pretty sure if I had one, I would not be on my second phone in under six weeks. I picked up an Incase slider in while. I’m psyched on it! It’s super sleek and doesn’t take away from the design of the phone.

Still trying to get the backed up Defgrip database from my host. I talked to them today about it and was able to find out the file size…. It was pretty big… but that’s all I really know… Hopefully I’ll have it tomorrow.

I went to this Red Bull Soap Box race last Saturday. It was a great turnout, but I think the crowd was a bit confused. There was not much cheering and everyone just kind of stood there… A bit weird. I guess that’s how that Flutog even it as well… Not sure if people are expecting more, but I kind of felt bad for the people that participated in the event. They spent all this time and money building these soap box cars and when they got to the bottom of the hill, they’d be super psyched, start cheering, then realize no one in the audicene was reacting, kid of look around then walk off the track… Kind of weird.

Here’s some photos shot with my Yashica and a few with my Minolta. I hadn’t shot with the Minolta for a bit, so it was fun to mess around with it again. I love the 28mm lens and shooting with it really makes me want to do more 35mm SLR stuff…

Old Hawaii

In 2003 me and my best friends went on a trip to Kauai, Hawaii where we stayed at Josh’s parents house. It was a great trip and I’m super psyched to go back with Michaela, Josh and Shanti in December! I was going through all my old film a few months back and came across these photos. They were taken with my old Minolta X-570, my first camera, and to this day, they are still some of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken. Here are a few scans… They are a bit shitty because I just scanned the prints, but one day, I’ll take the time to scan the negs.

A Weekend in Van

Andrew McMullen came up for the weekend so we could work on a portfolio site for him. He had his layout and work ready to go, so as soon as he got here on Saturday morning, we sat down and started to bang it out. We worked pretty much the whole day Saturday and Sunday, stopping to hang out at Chris Young’s for a BBQ birthday bash. I guess Chris went sky diving earlier… A surprise gift! We also went to the movies to see Step Brothers on Sunday with Michaela… so good! The one thing I found odd about the movie was everyone was overly tanned and it looked real fake… Weird? Anyway, here are a few photos from the weekend.

Toronto

I just got back from a 10 day trip to Toronto with MacNeil. We were out there with the Kink team to do some demos at the two of the Ten Pack Am contests and film in the city during the week. I had a rad trip and it was cool to finally get to spend some real time in Toronto. I went there last year, but was only in the city for one day. It definitely has more of an east coast feel and some neighborhoods made me feel like I was in New Jersey. Big old houses, tree lined streets… Metro Jam is going down just outside of Toronto over Labor Day weekend, so I’m pretty psyched to get to go back.

I picked up a Yashica T4 from David Lang before he moved back to Singapore and this was my first time using it. It’s funny to roll around with a film camera, shooting photos for a blog… No one gets it… Until they see the photos. I’m super psyched on the camera and it’s crazy, cus on most of my trips, I’ll shoot around 100 digital photos a day and on this trip, I only shot like 20 the whole time… Below are some of my favorites, but you can check out all of them on the MacNeil blog.

I’ll be taking off for Toronto at 5am tomorrow… yes! I Love early flights!! Oh, wait… They suck… The last time I went to the airport my taxi driver got in a car crash on the way, so hopefully this trip will be a bit smoother. I’ll be out there for 10 days with the Kym and Jaumell on a MacNeil trip and there’s a good chance I won’t be updating this blog… I will be posting on the MacNeil site, so you can follow my trip over there – macneilbmx.com
